Crude Protein

A measure of the total nitrogen-containing compounds in a food, used to estimate protein content. It's called 'crude' because the lab method detects all nitrogen — not just digestible protein from meat or legumes. High crude protein numbers don't always equal high-quality, bioavailable protein.

Amino Acids

The individual building blocks that make up proteins. Some amino acids are 'essential,' meaning the body cannot manufacture them and they must come from food. Taurine (critical for cats) and arginine are examples of essential amino acids for companion animals.

Taurine

Arachidonic Acid

Crude Fibre

Moisture Content

The percentage of water in a food as sold. Wet foods typically contain 75–85% moisture, while dry kibble contains around 10%. Moisture content affects how much actual nutrition is delivered per gram and matters especially for urinary tract health in cats.

Chelated Minerals

Minerals (such as zinc, iron, or manganese) that have been chemically bound to an amino acid or protein to improve absorption in the gut. Chelated forms are generally considered more bioavailable than inorganic mineral salts.

Bioavailability

How much of a nutrient can actually be absorbed and used by the body after digestion. A food can list high levels of a nutrient on the label, but if that nutrient is poorly digestible, little of it reaches the animal's tissues where it's needed.

Guaranteed Analysis

The section of a pet food label that lists minimum or maximum percentages of key nutrients — typically crude protein, crude fat, crude fibre, and moisture. These are guaranteed thresholds, not exact values, so actual nutrient levels may differ.

Prebiotics

Non-digestible dietary fibres (such as inulin or fructooligosaccharides) that feed beneficial bacteria in the gut. They differ from probiotics, which are live bacterial cultures. Prebiotics help sustain a healthy gut microbiome, supporting digestion and immune function.

Complete and Balanced

A regulatory claim indicating that a pet food meets the nutritional standards established by AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) for a specific life stage. Foods labeled this way are formulated to serve as a pet's sole diet without additional supplementation.
