Early Warning Signs for Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis also referred to as MS, is a disease that affects the brain and spinal cord (the central nervous system). With Multiple Sclerosis, the immune system intended to keep your body healthy attacks the body parts that are important to the overall functioning in the body. The protecting sheath which covers the nerve fibers gets damaged, resulting in weakened functioning in the brain, spinal cord and the rest of the body. The early signs include:
1. Bladder issues
The majority of people with Multiple sclerosis suffer from a dysfunctional bladder. As a result, symptoms related to Urinary such as lack of ability to hold in urine frequently urinating and a strong urge to urinate are very common to people with this disease. Some people experience diarrhea, constipation, or loss of bowel control.
2. Cognitive problems
Cognitive impairment crops up in nearly half of multiple sclerosis patients since the disease causes damage to the nerve fibers in the brain. Cognitive problems include language problems, complex attention, difficulty staying organized, episodic, and (information processing speed) and shortened attention span. Depressions, as well as other emotional health issues, are also very common.
3. Balance problems
Balance problems or dizziness are also very common signs of MS. Problems with coordination and balance often decrease the patient’s mobility and thus they have a problem with walking. A patient suffering from MS may feel lightheaded and feel as though they are spinning. Vertigo (spinning) symptoms occur mostly when you stand up.
4. Vision problems
This is the most common early symptom of Multiple sclerosis. Soreness usually affects the optic nerve, and this disrupts vision. This results in problems such as double vision, blurred vision, or even loss of vision. You might not detect the vision problems right away since the deterioration of clear vision may be slow. Feeling pain when looking to one side or up can, in addition, come with vision loss.
5. Tingling and numbness
Tingling feelings and numbness are another most common early warning signs of Multiple sclerosis. The disease affects the brain and spinal cord nerves. The spinal cord is the message center of the body; it sends signals all over the body. When the spinal cord nerves are affected, it fails to send signals which result in numbness. The Tingling and numbness commonly affects the arms, fingers, face, and legs.
6. Pains and spasms
People with Multiple Sclerosis commonly suffer from involuntary muscle spasms and chronic pains. According to a study done by the Multiple Sclerosis Society, more than half of people suffering from MS had pain and spasms. Muscle spasms are also common, and you might get stiff joints and muscles. The patient might also experience painful jerking of the joints. The most affected parts are the legs. Back pain is also experienced.
7. Weakness or fatigue
MS patients experience general weakness or fatigue, even if they had a good sleep throughout the night. There is unexplained tiredness that affects about 85% of the people during the early stages of MS. This chronic fatigue may occur when nerves weaken in the spinal cord. The fatigue may appear abruptly and may last for several weeks before getting better. This weakness is often noticed in the legs. Fatigue-related to MS is likely to worsen as the day progresses and is usually provoked by humidity and heat. It also crops up more easily and all of a sudden than the usual fatigue.
