6 Early Warning Signs of Nasal Polyps

Nasal polyps are common teardrop-shaped or peeled grapes-like growths that form in one’s sinuses or nose. They are not painful and often treatable through medications. However, in some cases, doctors may recommend surgery. To get timely treatment, one must recognize the early warning signs of nasal polyps. Below are some to look out for.

1. Obstructive sleep apnea
Nasal polyps are non-cancerous, but they cause irregularities in the pharynx and nose that can worsen sleep apnea. It also inhibits the airflow, making the condition riskier for people with sleep apnea as they may stop breathing in their slumber unknowingly.

2. Recurring headaches
If one notices that they are getting recurrent headaches due to sinus infection and inflammation, it could be a sign of nasal polyps. In such a situation, it is advisable to immediately get tested by a specialist to identify the source of the problems.

3. Post nasal leakage
If one always feels like the mucus is draining in the back of their throat, they must see a doctor about it as it could be a sign of nasal polyps. In some cases, one may also lose their sense of smell.

4. Runny and stuffy nose
Nasal polyps worsen during the allergy season when one starts experiencing severe flu-like symptoms. If one has a persistent runny nose, it could be due to the inflammation of the nasal passages. As a result, one may also face discomfort like sneezing and irritation in the nose.

5. Blocked nose
When large clusters of nasal polyps grow inside one’s nose, they may experience a constant state of blocked nose, making it difficult to breathe with ease. In some cases, one may also become vulnerable to infections. However, a blocked nose can happen due to a variety of reasons. Therefore, one should get diagnosed to know the exact cause of the discomfort.

6. Blurred vision
Blurred or double vision is a rare early warning sign of nasal polyps that shows up in people with cystic fibrosis. When large clusters of polyps obstruct the airflow and leak the fluid through one’s nasal cavity, it can lead to certain complications such as double vision. So, if one feels like their vision is impaired, it must be treated as a warning sign.

If one has nasal polyps, a doctor prescribes medications immediately. These medicines are designed to contract the size of the polyps. One may either be prescribed corticosteroids, antihistamine, or antibiotic medications to reduce symptoms. However, if the nasal polyps have become medication-resistant, then the doctor may recommend its surgical removal. It is an outpatient surgery that is performed endoscopically.

One doesn’t have to deal with these annoying nasal polyps on their own. Awareness about these warning signs can be useful.
